Abstract

Apart from Balanophora sp. (reported by K.H. Srinivasan in 1939), no other phanerogamous parasite has been observed on coffee in India until January 1972, when Cuscuta reflexa was recorded on arabica coffee near Kodlipet, Coorg. A study showed that the parasite makes direct contact with the xylem of the host and absorbs nutrients through tracheids, resulting in debility and the gradual decline of affected coffee plants.
