Abstract

When adult female Wistar rats were fed on normal diets containing 10% mango ginger (Curcuma amada) for 4 weeks, liver triacylglycerols (TG), serum total and VLDL + LDL TG were decreased. In rats made hypertriglyceridaemic by a diet rich in sucrose and then fed on the diet with mango ginger, liver and serum TG tended to be lower. Among rats fed on mango ginger, the increases in liver and serum total lipids after treatment with Triton WR-1339 were significantly lower than in controls. This effect of mango ginger was also seen in rats given the equivalent of 0.3% curcumin-free extract but not in those given the equivalent of 10%. In both those groups, lipoprotein lipase activities were increased as in the rats given mango ginger.
