Abstract

The serum total, free, esterified and (low-density + very-low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol concentrations of rats maintained on a 10% refined rice bran oil (RBO) diet were significantly lower than those on a 10% groundnut oil diet; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was higher. Addition of oryzanol at 0.5% to the diet containing RBO showed a further significant decrease in serum total cholesterol. Liver lipids of rats fed on RBO were also markedly lower than their groundnut oil-fed counterparts. Though the liver lipids of rats fed on oryzanol with RBO showed a further decrease, it was not statistically significant. The ability of RBO to decrease cholesterol concentration seems to be due to oryzanol and to some other components of the unsaponifiable matter.
