Abstract
For 4 weeks 3 groups of 5 Wistar rats 45 days old were given 15 g of a synthetic maize starch diet daily or raw garlic extract 0.5 g/ml in 75 g maize starch 15 g daily or that diet with boiled garlic. Giving raw garlic led to growth retardation, decrease in gut flora, reduced serum proteins concentration and altered albumin:globulin ratio. Giving boiled garlic stimulated the growth of intestinal bacteria, e.g., streptococci and coliforms.
