Abstract
The physiological effects of ragi (Eleusine coracana), mature dry cowpea (Vigna catjang), brinjal (Solanum melangena) and guava (Psidium guajava) and fractions of ragi and cowpea given to rats were studied. All the materials except ragi starch increased faecal weight with a concomitant decrease in the transit time (TT). The cotyledon portion of cowpea was more effective in decreasing TT than the testa. Whole cowpea and brinjal changed the caecal volume and content. Digestibility of fibre from the test materials showed a wide variation.
