Additional Information: |
In general algae are ubiquitous and their history is as old as that of other plants. Algae are cosmopolitan in nature; they exist in temperate, climatic and alpine zones. The results indicated that microalgal extracts especially Botryococcus braunii were found to contain bioactive principles of different properties viz, growth regulating principles in mosquito life cycle, elicitation of secondary metabolite production in plant tissue cultures and plant growth regulation. Although the present study indicated their presence further studies are required to substantiate the results. The green microalga produces secondary carotenoids under stress and blue green alga Nostoc produces predominantly phycoerythrin, which may be explored for production of the pinkish red colour pigment phycoerythrin. Phycoerythrin is having commercial value not only as food and cosmetic colourant but also as immunoflurescent tag in diagnostics.
|
