Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Erythrocyte is a simple cell system but in recent years, the complexities in the nature of membrane components during pathological conditions such as diabetes are coming into light. Interesting relationship between diabetic retinopathy and erythrocyte anionic charge in type 2 diabetic patients was discovered which showed a significant reduction in charge density in diabetic patients compared to healthy subjects. In steptozotocin-induced diabetic rats similar results were obtained. During pathological conditions such as malaria, the RBCs are infected with plasmodium (pRBC), GAGs such as HS, CS-A and HA have been suggested as important receptors for the binding of pRBCs to RBCs, endothelial cells and syncytiotropluoblsts. Then pRBCs play a role by binding to other normal RBCs thereby forming a rosette like structure. HS like structures have been implicated in rosette formation based on the inability of RBCs treated with heparin-lyase III to form such a structure. The study reveal the importance of GAGs on RBCs. There is however no reports on the structure-function of GAGs from RBCs. Recently GAGs in normal human RBCs were detected by immunochemical localization. An attempt is made to isolate such an important molecule from RBCs of control and diabetic experimental rats which would pave way for further characterization and can act as a marker during pathological conditions.
