Additional Information: Diabetic neuropathy is one of most common complications of diabetes mellitus. It affects nearly 60% of all diabetics and is prevalent among people with a history of fifteen or more years of diabetes. Researchers from throughout the world have been looking in to the underlying mechanisms for this complication. Various findings converge upon the hypothesis that the oxidative stress building up due to hyperglycaemia is the root cause for cell dysfunction and degeneration, hence affecting the nervous system as a whole. Both peripheral and autonomic functions are affected. Keeping this view in mind, biochemists and cell biologists, are trying to channel the antioxidant properties of various flavonoids to rescue the cells and / or prevent further damage by hyperglycaemia induced oxidative stress. Quercetin is one such flavonoid that is ubiquitously present in fruits, vegetables and various spices. It has been well documented that it inhibits lipid peroxidation, chelate iron and directly scavenge hydroxyl, peroxy and superoxide radicals. Hence, the present study examined the potential of quercetin to protect against diabetic neuropathy associated oxidative stress employing Streptozotocin (STZ) rat model.
