Additional Information: Anacardium occidentale (cashew apple) is a tropical coastal plant of great economic importance. Its apples are in good demand all over the world, although the cultivation is limited to a few tropical countries. It is edible, with pleasant flavor and aroma and high nutritive value, which is mainly due to high vitamin C and sugar contents. Cashew apple is a clear example of food wastage in the producing countries, losses being as high as 90%.The wastage of the cashew apple occurs mainly due to the rapid ripening property of the fruit, no proper post harvest processing, low shelf life of the fruit and transportation. Hence our main investigation is to extend the shelf life of the cashew apple through gamma (γ) irradiation. In the present study, cashew apple was subjected to γ irradiation of 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 KGy dosage on inhibition of microbial growth in cashew apple during storage. The effect of irradiation on the shelf Life of cashew apple in comparison with non irradiated cashew apple was studied in terms of chemical, physical, physiological and microbial characteristics. It may be inferred from the present study that among the gamma irradiation treatments, 0.25 KGy dose of irradiation was most effective that extended the storage life of cashew fruits with nuts (Dhana hybrid) up to 12 days by delayed fruit ripening without effecting post harvest quality attributes (in terms of high retention of ascorbic acid content, fruit texture as compared to the untreated control for 6 days under same LT storage (7+1⁰C and 80-90 % RH) conditions. It is concluded from the microbial studies of gamma irradiated cashew apple fruits with nuts that among the treatments, 0.75 KGy was most effective in restricting the microbial loads of mesophilic aerobes, coliforms and yeast and molds to 100000, 370, 53000 CFU/g on 12th day of LT storage as compared with untreated control on 6 days of LT storage conditions (17000000, 380 and 85000 CFU/g).
