Additional Information: Karanja (Pongamia pinnata) is one of the commonest trees of India and its seed oil is plentiful. The oil is extracted and sold in commercial quantities as non- edible industrial oil. The seed contains 27 – 39% oil and around 20 – 28% proteins. Though the meal is a rich source of protein both in terms of quantity and quality, with good amounts of lysine and sulphur containing amino acids, the usage of proteins is restricted by the presence of some anti-nutritional compounds present both in oil and meal. A group of 3- methoxy 2,3,7,8 furano flavonoids (karanjin) constituting around 5-6% by weight of the oil mainly restricts the usage of oil and meal as a feed/food. The present study deals with the preparation of seed meal, proximate analysis of karanja seed meal. Programme was envisaged for understanding the relationship between extraction of protein and saponins from defatted seed meal. Saponins were separated and identified by HPLC methods.
