Additional Information: | An unsteady 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of spray dryer was performed in a pilot scale short-form spray dryer. The Eulerian–Lagrangian approach was employed for the gas-droplet flow. This study differs from previous work in that the droplet collision and breakup was considered during the transient simulation and the particle velocity and temperature was also studied during spray drying under unsteady state conditions. This study provides the particle histories with processing time, which is important to assess the final product quality. The CFD study suggested that in the air flowing core region (r < 0.4 m) smaller particles travel with a lesser velocity than those of the bigger particles. A recirculation of smaller particles was observed in the outside core region along with the air stream. There was decrease in the velocity of the smaller particles towards their terminal velocity. The particle temperature was less during the initial period of drying and further increase was noted with increase in the time period. The study shows that outlet temperature had a greater effect on the temperature histories experienced by particles than the inlet air temperature. |
