Abstract

The demand for highly nutritious foods for needy population has been felt world over. The designer foods viz. infant foods, food for adults, convalescing persons, and also geriatric foods have been in big demand. Since there is limitation in enhancing value of edible plants by conventional breeding methods, genetic engineering approaches have been adopted for enhanced value addition for nutritional and functional attributes. In this context, GM crop with increased quality protein; vitamins; oils with unsaturated fats; foods enriched with antioxidants have been produced. The enhanced processing advantage of GM crops has added benefit to the industry to save on processing costs and/ or for the production of quality products. In India, crops such as Amaranthus with high protein, Indian mustard with improved oil, tomato with high solids, and edible vaccines have been developed and are pending approval by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, for cultivation and usage. Detection of genetic modification and its quantification by foods is gaining importance in view of the mandatory labeling requirement advocated in several countries including India. The communication focuses on the above aspects.
