Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Osmotically driven membrane processes, such as forward osmosis, operate on the principle of osmotic transport of water across a semi-permeable membrane from a dilute feed solution into a concentrated draw solution. The desalination of low molecular weight compound (NaCl) was explored by forward osmosis. Mechanism of water transport from feed to draw solution side during forward osmosis in a situation when feed contains H2O or low molecular weight compound (NaCl) was elucidated. The effects of membrane orientation, draw solution concentration, two different membranes (CTA and Hydropack), draw solution temperature, and quantitative analysis of internal concentration polarization (ICP) phenomena was studied. Trans-membrane flux values obtained using CTA membrane was higher compared to the Hydropack membrane and flux values in mode I (feed towards support layer) was higher compared to mode II (feed towards active layer). Increase in draw solution concentration and draw solution temperature resulted in increased flux.
