Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a growing health concern in developing countries
including India, resulting from an alarming rise in the known risk factors such as
physical inactivity, overweight, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. The role
of food constituents in the etiology of chronic diseases and in their prevention has
been increasingly understood in recent years. Effective nutritional intervention
strategies for preventing or managing chronic diseases also call for basic information
on the nutraceutical potential of non-nutrient phytochemicals, especially the ones with
antioxidant properties. Recently attention has been focused on non-nutrient
phytochemicals and polyphenols such as the flavonoids, as potential therapeutic
agents in the prevention and management of CVD due to their antioxidant nature.
