Abstract

Metastasis is a crucial step in cancer pathogenicity and adds severity to the
disease mainly because of the entry of cancer cell into a highly manipulative
stage. Several studies including studies from our laboratory have indicated
that galectin-3 plays a key role in metastasis. Galectin-3 binding protein
(G3BP) is reported as a ligand for galectin-3. G3BP is a heavily Nglycosylated
protein with a molecular mass of 90 kDa and it appears to
mediate cell-cell adhesion via bridging galectin-3 molecules on adjacent
tumor cells in a carbohydrate-dependent manner.
