Abstract

Pleurotus sajor-caju was cultivated on sugar cane (Saccharum sinense) bagasse and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) stalks fortified with 1% (NH4)2SO4 and 0.5% KH2PO4 and yields of 0.85 and 0.81 kg, resp., of fresh mushrooms (90% moisture) were obtained per kg of dry substrate. When the spent bagasse (residue, left after the harvest of fruiting bodies) was utilized for the solid state fermentation of Trichoderma sp., 1.1 U of cellulase (1,4-(1,3;1,4)-beta-D-glucan 4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4) and 290 U of D-xylanase (1,4-beta-D-xylan xylanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.8) per g of dry substrate were produced. Corresponding enzyme yields obtained with residual tobacco stalks were 1.5 U and 253 U. On fresh bagasse and tobacco stalks, enzyme yields by Trichoderma sp. (U/g dry wt.) were 0.9 U and 0.5 U of cellulase and 234 U and 49 U of D-xylanase, resp.
