Abstract
The mushroom spp. (i) Pleurotus flabellatus and (ii) P. sajor-caju were grown in a locally constructed village shed at Mysore, India during the rainy (temp. 20-26 degree C, RH70-90%) and winter (temp. 15-25 degree C, RH min. 80%) seasons. 2 types of bed were used, viz. a polyethylene bag, 35 x 55 cm with 0.9 kg straw (PB) and a cylindrical hanging bed containing 3.6 kg straw (HB), both seeded with 3% mushroom spores and 1% horsegram powder. Vegetative growth required 10-12 days for (i) and 18-20 days for (ii). Average rainy season yields (recorded as % of dry straw used) for both PB and HB were 50.05-51 for (1) and 83.8-83.9 for (ii). Max. yields of both (i) and (ii) were obtained at 20-26 degree C and RH 70%. In winter vegetative growth of (i) was delayed and the yield reduced to 35.5-41.6%, but yield of (ii) remained satisfactory at 69-70%. A selling price for fresh mushrooms of 4 rupees/kg is suggested.
