Abstract
Kafir corn at 20% moisture was fumigated with methyl bromide and
ethylene dibromide and hermetically stored for 60 days at 25°-29°C. Molds
and bacteria were destroyed. Changes in fat acidity, water-soluble acidity,
reducing sugars, amino nitrogen, and weight/volume ratio were retarded.
Similar results were obtained with chloropicrin and ethylene oxide. The
possibility of cold sterilization of moist grain and storage under aseptic conditions
in hermetic storage is discussed.
