Abstract

In recent years much work has been done on the preparation and testing of supplementary foods based on oilseeds, suitable for infants and children. The foods may be broadly classified under 3 heads; milk substitutes and infant foods based on oilseeds and nuts, protein-rich foods based on oilseed meals, and protein-enriched cereal foods, biscuits, bread and others. This review summarizes the results of studies on preparation, chemical composition and evaluation of nutritive value through animal experiments and trials with infants and children. The results indicate that supplementary foods based on oilseeds and nuts are effective in improving the nutritive value of poor diets consumed by children in the developing countries. It is concluded that largescale production and distribution of these foods will help to overcome protein-energy malnutrition among weaned infants and children.
