Abstract
7 minor components of asafoetida (a flavouring) are characterized by steam distillation, adsorption chromatography and GC/MS analysis. They are: dimethyl trisulphide, 2-butyl methyl disulphide, 2-butyl methyl trisulphide, di-2-butyl disulphide, di-2-butyl trisulphide, di-2-butyl tetrasulphide, and an unnamed component. The identity of some have been confirmed by synthesis and comparison of GC retentions. Quantitative composition of the constituents in the volatile oil was also determined.
