Abstract

Insect infestation was studied in coffee beans of Arabica Cherry, Plantation, Peaberry and Robusta varieties from inland curing works of S. India. Initial moisture content varied from 8.5 to 10%. Initial infestation and ability of insects (Aracecarus fasciculatus) to breed at 28-32 degree C and 60-70% or 78-80% RH were investigated. No infestation was found at initial moisture less than 9%. Insect activity occurred in beans at 78-80% RH, accompanied by increases in moisture, kernel damage, frass and uric acid. Varying degrees of infestation occurred in Arabica Cherry and Plantation coffee at 78-80% RH while Robusta was more resistant.
