Abstract

The following fumigants and fumigant mixtures were tried: chloropicrin, ethylene oxide, ethyl formate, ethyl bromide, ethylene oxide CO2, ethylene oxide ethyl formate, ethyl formate ethyl bromide, methyl bromide ethylene dibromide, methyl bromide chloropicrin, ethyl formate chloropicrin. Fruit (i) fresh, (ii) blanched, (iii) soaked in potassium metabisulphite solution to incorporate 1000 ppm SO2 was packed in unsealed polyethylene bags and fumigated. Spoilage was assessed bacteriologically and organoleptically. Pretreatment with potassium metabisulphite and subsequent fumigation extended storage life of the fruit from 20-40 days to 100-200 days. Of the gaseous fumigants, methyl bromide was more effective than ethylene oxide on (ii) and (iii); of liquid fumigants ethyl formate and chloropicrin, singly or combined were most promising and also increased the ease of handling fruit.
