Abstract

Soy deodorizer distillate (DOD) is a valuable by-product in the refining of soybean oils. It is potentially a raw material for production of natural tocopherol. In this study, supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) extraction of chemically modified soy DOD at 3 levels of pressure (180-300 bar) and temp. (40-60C) was carried out to optimize conditions for enrichment of tocopherols in the raffinate. After modification, soy DOD contained approx. 90% fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and showed improved solubility in SC-CO2 and better extraction rate. Since FAME are more volatile, they are extracted preferentially over tocopherols and other high mol. wt. compounds. Higher pressure and temp. increased the solubility of compounds with high mol. wt. and tocopherols due to increased density of SC-CO2. As a result, extraction at higher pressures and temp. gave better yields of FAME along with tocopherols in the extract, which decreased enrichment of tocopherols in the raffinate. However, specific pressure and temp. increased the solubility of FAME due to their volatility and enhanced enrichment of tocopherols in the raffinate. Enrichment of tocopherols to 10 x the original concn. of feed occurred using SC-CO2 extraction conditions of 180 bar and 60C.
