Abstract
Ways of improving sustainability throughout the food chain in India are discussed. Aspects considered include: the perceived need for increased communication through the food production chain from farm to consumer; problems and potential benefits of competing in a business world that is strongly influenced by intellectual property rights and World Trade Organization agreements; general perceptions of reforms required in India to improve nutritional quality and safety of processed foods; the importance of adding value to foods at the farm level; and the role of the Central Food Technological Research Institute in improving quality of foods produced in India.
