Abstract
Results of a food intake survey are presented which was carried out at a home for old people in Mysore City, India, for 2 groups of subjects (aged 60-74 and <greater than or equal to>75 yr). The subjects' staple food was rice followed by wheat, whereas consumption of milk, visible fat and vegetables was limited. Men tended to consume more meat, sweet foods and oily and fried foods than did women. Diets of both age groups were found to be ill-balanced with deficiencies noted for energy, protein, fat, folic acid, vitamin B12 and a number of minerals including Fe, Mg, Cu and Zn. Possible means of improving dietary intake by the institutionalized elderly are considered.
