Additional Information: | 50 In the present study, we found that fertility rate is greatly influenced by the shape index and weight of the eggs. The ideal egg weight for a higher fertility percentage was 60 g and ideal shape index was 76. Diabetic chick embryos grew poorly and had a lower body weight compared to normal chick embryos. At the same time, diabetic chick embryos treated with bioactive compounds, had their embryo and organ weights comparable to non-diabetic control groups. From the results obtained, all the test compounds tended to bring the plasma glucose significantly towards normal value. Among them, the bixin showed a better hypoglycemic activity followed by capsaicin while curcumin and quercetin showed a moderate activity. Evaluating the effect of different compounds on liver glycogen level, treatments has a significant role in the alteration of liver glycogen. Diabetic liver glycogen showed a reduced value when compared to the normal. Curcumin and bixin showed more or less equal to the normal value. On the other hand, treatment of the diabetic chick embryos with the capsaicin and quercetin caused increase in the liver glycogen but not significant. The effect of different compounds on cholesterol showed that diabetic chick embryos had an increased cholesterol level which is higher than the normal. In the curcumin and quercetin treated embryos the cholesterol level was reduced to normal. Other two compounds showed closer values more or less to control. The triglyceride level of diabetic chick embryo got increased compared to the normal. Quercetin and bixin reduced the triglycerides level almost to normal but capsaicin failed to reduce and curcumin showed a moderate activity. The plasma urea level got increased in diabetic chicks compared to normal. The histological analysis of heart and brain did not show any change in control, diabetic and treated groups. The results indicated that the bioactive test compounds significantly decreased plasma glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, urea, creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen, while increased liver glycogen levels in treated diabetic chick embryos as compared with control diabetic chick embryos. Thus, the in ovo model is proved to be a valid tool for researchers in evaluating novel drugs for antidiabetic activity. |
