Abstract
Sterically controlled styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymers were prepared by inclusion
polymerization using molar equivalents of -cyclodextrin (-CD) and its derivative. Comonomer
compositions, reactivity ratios, monomer sequence and average styrene and acrylonitrile sequence
lengths were determined using 13C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weight of the polymers prepared
increased with decreasing -CD concentration, but was found to be less than the control. With
increase in the styrene: -CD ratios the average acrylonitrile sequence length and run number of
the polymers increased. The glass transition temperature (Tg) also increased along with the melting
temperature (Tm) of the polymers at higher styrene:-CD ratios.
