Additional Information: | Antimicrobials of plant origin are of interest to the food and pharmaceutical industry for the control of microbial pathogens. In the present study, attempts were made to study the antimicrobial studies of Peltophorum ferrugineum flower extracts and mechanisms of their antibacterial action. Peltophorum ferrugineum (Family: Leguminosae) occurs in India and South East Asia, introduced to Senegal in 1944, and earlier to West Africa and other tropical countries and is an ingredient in the traditional medicine. Peltophorum ferrugineum flowers were successively extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol using a Soxhlet extractor for 8h each. The dried flower extracts were used to determine their antimicrobial capacity. Its action against the Gram-negative bacteriae viz. Esccherichia coli and Yersinia enterocolitica; and Gram-positive bacteriae viz. Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus and fungi viz. Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizopus sp. and Penicillium sp and antimutagenicity against the tester strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA 98, TA 100, and TA 1531) has been investigated using a range of methods. It is reported that exposing these organisms to various concentrations of Peltophorum ferrugineum flower extracts inhibited growth of microorganisms. Peltophorum ferrugineum flower extracts were found to be effective against the growth of the food-borne pathogens. The extracts showed bactericidal activity, enhanced membrane expansion and loss of genetic material and decreased protein synthesis and respiration. The effect increased with the increase in concentrations of the Peltophorum ferrugineum flower extracts and in certain cases both increase in the extracts along with the incubation time had significant effects on the food-borne pathogens. The antimicrobial activity may probably be attributed to expansion of cell membrane, inhibition of metabolic activity and degradation of nuclear materials. The Peltophorum ferrugineum flower extracts can be used against food-borne pathogens to control their growth and thus can be an interesting field of study for application in the food industries. |
