Additional Information: | The investigation was undertaken with the objective of analyzing anti - oxidant potentials of phenolics and saponins in defatted karanja seed meal in comparison with defatted soya seed meal. The chemical composition of karanja seed meal was found to be 33% fat; 31.2% protein; and moisture content of 4.2%. The saponins content was determined in defatted karanja seed meal in both crude and isolated fractions. The anti - oxidant potential of the components was analyzed in different solvent systems. Methanol extracts gave lesser yields in comparison to butanol extracts. The polyphenols content of crude extract of defatted karanja seed meal showed wide variation ranging from 110 – 115mg/100g of meal. A higher anti - oxidant activity was observed in butanol extract of karanja seed meal in comparison to soya flour; which could be attributed to the higher concentration of Phenolic acids and their derivatives. Among solvents used for extracting saponins from soya and karanja seed meal, butanol extract followed by methanol extracts exhibited higher proton radical scavenging activity. A higher association was observed between polyphenols content and free radical scavenging and metal ion chelating assays indicating that the phenolics has both metal chelating and free radical scavenging ability and are responsible for the anti - oxidant activity. Total anti - oxidant activity showed reduction in butanol extract compared to methanol extract. A significant association was evident between the polyphenols content and total anti - oxidant activity. |
