Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Plant extracts are rich in various bioactive metabolites and useful as botanicals, antimicrobial, and also finds use in traditional medicine to combat diseases. Antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of many plants have been investigated by researchers during the last three decades. Similar studies on in vitro established cultures of plants would be useful as models for screening the potential of respective metabolites of plants. The antimicrobial activity of in vitro established cultures of Bixa orellana and antioxidant potential of in vitro established soybean cultures was studied. B. orellana in vitro culture extracts exhibited significant antimicrobial activity and it varies with the in vitro plant part. Leaf callus showed high bacterial inhibition activity against B. subtilis. Similarly, in vitro cultures of soybean exhibited moderated free radical scavenging activity as assayed by DPPH method. The antioxidant activity of these in vitro cultures were further substantiated by total phenol and total flavonoid content of respective cultures. Callus cultures of soybean showed least activity and in vitro leaf showed more antioxidant potential.
