Additional Information: Marine environment is a rich source of variety of biomolecules of economic importance. Marine flora and fauna survive in extreme conditions and produce novel compounds including antimicrobial substances as defence mechanism. Seaweeds and mangroves are known to possess medicinal properties. Many reports are available on the antimicrobial activity of compounds isolates from seaweeds from different regions. Not much information is available on the antimicrobial activity of extracts from Indian seaweeds and mangroves. Hence this study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of extracts from different Indian seaweeds and mangroves. Shrimp waste is rich in protein, lipids and carotenoids. Shrimp waste can be preserved by fermentation and the proteins from shrimp waste can be isolated by different techniques. Lactic acid bacteria used for fermentation is known to produce antimicrobial substances. Few reports indicate the antimicrobial activity of peptides isolated from different sources. Hence this study was carried out assess the antimicrobial activity of fermented shrimp waste and the protein isolates from shrimp waste.
