Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Staphylococcus species is an important food borne pathogen, but not all the Staphylococci are pathogenic. Therefore correct identification of Staphylococcus species is a challenging task. Currently, conventional phenotypic characterization based on biochemical kits and automated system are being used for identification. These phenotypic characterization have limitation due to variable expression of characters and ambiguity in the interpretation of end point reactions. The use of nucleic acids targets with their high sensitivity and specificity may provide an alternative means of accurately identifying Staphylococcus species. Therefore in present investigation an attempt was made to identify Staphylococcus species by using PCR. The food isolates of Staphylococcus were tested using primers specific to S. aureus and S. saprophyticus. The results obtained in this study showed all the food isolate tested were belonging to S. aureus group. Further work is required to characterize them for pathogenecity traits
