Abstract

Outdoor storage of wheat and paddy rice popularly known as Cover and Plinth (CAP) storage is a common practice in India since three decades. During a storage period lasting 6 months to 2 years, bag-stacks of wheat and paddy rice are affected by the natural elements including wind forces, sunlight and rain, Condensation of water vapour in the grain stacks under cover is an important problem in CAP storage. Outdoor storage also poses problems in the protection of food grains against depredating agents such as insects, birds, rodents and microorganisms Inevitably, storage loss will be more in slacks held outdoors than in the stacks stored inside warehouse/shed. There is lack of data on the extent of quality loss in wheat as well as paddy rice under CAP storage in India. Experiments on wheat and paddy rice stacks revealed thai the average daily loss of phosphine during fumigation was more in outdoor stacks (16-30%) than in indoor slacks (<15%) and the higher rate of gas loss resulted in control failures. Measures to reduce storage loss in open storage include selection of storage site where wind forces and rainfall are less and deployment of adequate manpower for stock operations.
