Abstract

The Indian mole rat or bandicoot /Bsndicota bengalensis Gray) causes severe damage to coconut saplings raised in nurseries, It attacks saplings at a particular growth stage, consuming the cortex at the junction of the seed nut and shoot system. damage starts when the saplings are nine months old and continues thereafter. Maxi· mum damage occurs at 13, 14 and 15 months after sowing. It is considered that the sale of saplings at 12 months old would help greatly to minimise losses. Alternatively, an effective rodent control programme, in and around the nursery area, needs to be implemented as soon as infestation occurs.
