Additional Information:	The role of nanotechnology in the creation of a new generation of packaging materials are explored. Although the use of nanotechnology as a packaging solution is still in its infancy there is cautious optimism about the exciting possible benefits of the new nanocomposite materials, particularly in the area of flexible and barrier packaging for food and pharmaceuticals. Despite the large steps taken by these tiny particles, there are still obstacles to overcome. Nanotechnology promises to be low-cost but a higher uptake is needed before costs can be driven down. Small production runs of nano-barriers and nano-silver packaging is expensive, whereas, higher production runs will reduce costs, resulting in similar prices to conventional technology such as scavengers. Progress is being made to lower costs and drive the technology forward.
