Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Melatonin and Serotonin are potent neurotransmitters in animal systems and are present in various plant species structurally and functionally. More importantly, melatonin in edible plants inevitably enters animals and humans through feed and food. In this study endogenous titers of food value plants viz. Coffea canephora, Daucas carota, Glycine max & Capsicum frutescens was established by performing HPLC. Melatonin levels are more in ex vitro leaves followed by seedling leaves compare to in vitro leaves Coffea. Serotonin levels were comparatively less in in vitro somatic embryos, callus, in vitro regenerated stems of Coffea. The levels are maximum in zygotic embryos of ripened fruits followed by green fruits. Interestingly, both serotonin and melatonin levels are quite increased by 20% and 10% respectively in two months old seeds (post harvest). Melatonin & Serotonin were found high in ripened fruits of followed by seeds, flowers, unripened fruits and callus of Capsicum, and also in Carrot callus cultures. Low levels of these indole amines were detected in ex vitro & in vitro leaves of Soybean. In view of the presence of these indole amines in the said samples, further studies are required to understand the actual role of serotonin and melatonin in the plant morphogenesis.
