Additional Information: | The genus Penicillium is one of the main sources of potentially active metabolites. In this study, thirteen Penicillium species are isolated from soil samples and identified based on colony characters on Malt Extract Agar (MEA) and morphological observations under the microscope. Two solvents were used for extracting metabolites from the mycelial mat and culture broth. The metabolites present in the crude extracts are used for performing insecticidal, antifungal and antibacterial activity. Out of two extracts tested, mycelial extracts in general had shown better insecticidal and antifungal activity. However, the broth extracts were found to be effective against only bacteria. The results of entomotoxicity assay indicated, Callosobruchus chinensis (pulse beetle) is more sensitive to Penicillium metabolites than Tribolium castaneum (Red flour beetle). m-DCM extracts of P. vermiculatum was found to be most effective against C. chinensis (93% mortality). With regard to fungicidal activity, m-DCM extracts of P. olsoni has shown antifungal activity against both A. parasiticus and A. flavus. The m-EA extracts of P. corylophilum-2 was also effective against P. rubrum. However, broth extracts of P. soppi (b-DCM) was active against Fusarium moniliforme and has not shown any activity against other three fungi tested. The results of bactericidal assay, indicated that, m-DCM extracts of P. rugulosum was most effective against Pseudomonas sp. Similarly, the m-EA extracts of P. roqueforti has shown better activity against B. subtilis. |
