Additional Information: | Bio based polymers are in a great demand now a days compared to petroleum based synthetic polymers owing to their biodegradability and eco-friendliness. Chitosan, which is derived from marine waste, is one such biopolymer, which finds application in the packaging industry. The present investigation looks into the improvement of chitosans’ moisture barrier properties while retaining its mechanical strength, by blending it with polycaprolactone. Field assisted methods are used for blending (ultrasonication) and drying (infared). It was found that using ultrasonication, good dispersion and uniform blends could be achieved which resulted in improved moisture and barrier properties (the addition of PCL to chitosan improved the water vapour barrier by almost 55%) and use of infrared reduced the drying time by almost 90% when compared to conventional hot air drying methods. |
