Abstract
In the area of microbial metabolites, a new horizon was opened about 3 decades ago when the systematic search for small molecular enzyme inhibitors and other bioactive metabolites from fermentation broths started. Although a number of investigations have been carried out on the isolation of pancreatic lipase inhibitors from synthetic, plant and microbial sources, only a few compounds were reported from actinomycetes. Moreover, there are only a few systematic studies on the screening, isolation, characterization and media optimization for the production of pancreatic lipase inhibitors. In spite of the development of synthetic compounds for pancreatic lipase inhibition, only a few compounds have gone to the marketing stage. Further, there is a need for the isolation of new and novel metabolites from the available natural sources, thus leading to the development of powerful inhibitors. The present work is an attempt to screen, isolate and characterize pancreatic lipase inhibitor from actinomycetes.
