Abstract

Cashew kernels desorb phosphine (PH3) in geometric progression till free PH3 is well within the PH3 holding capacity of cashew, and then the residue decreases regularly to zero over 9 to 20 days. This trend is reversed in the case of wheat. Desorption trends of PH3, decrease in levels of computed residues of PH3 and negligible levels of phosphorus in cashew go to suggest that PH3 in cashew is retained by lipid portion. The latter desorbs retained PH3 completely on removal of cashew from the fumigation atmosphere. The extensive data provided here make us to conclude that PH3 can also become a suitable fumigant for cashew kernels.
