Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia that contributes to retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy complications. The use of synthetic antidiabetic drugs causes side effects in diabetic patients. Hence, dietary strategy has been proposed to manage diabetes. We have hypothesized that Low-GI foods based on knowledge of Indian classical medicine (Ayurveda) may render antidiabetic efficacy. Hence, wheat (Triticum dicoccum), barley (Hordeum vulgare) and herbs Harad (Terminalia chebula), Behera (Terminalia bellerica) and Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) based Low-GI foods were developed.
