Abstract

This Dissertation / Report is the outcome of investigation carried out by the creator(s) / author(s) at the department/division of Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore mentioned below in this page.

Item Type: Student Project Report
Additional Information: Bio packaging is a term coined for biobased packaging materials derived from renewable sources. These materials can be used for food applications. One of the challenges faced by the food packaging industry in its efforts to produce biobased primary packaging is to match the durability of packaging with the product shelf- life. Chitosan being one of the bio based polymer with its excellent film forming and antimicrobial properties can be considered for the role as food packaging. Its moisture sensitivity and poor functional properties at high humid conditions limits its applications. The current study aimed to improve the mechanical and barrier properties by making blends with PCL and nano composites with MMT based nano clays. The study shows that addition of up to 30wt% PCL to chitosan can be done without affecting the clarity of the films. Barrier properties of chitosan showed an improvement of 51% without much affecting its mechanical properties. Nano composites films with MMT based nano clays were made by solution dispersion and casting method. Nano filler incorporation up to 5wt% were made and the resultant films exhibited a hybrid structure of exfoliation and intercalation. Biodegradation studies revealed that the modification of chitosan with PCL or nano clays did not affected the inherent biodegradation properties of chitosan films. Shelf life study shows that modified films have improved the functional properties to retain Colour, freshness and avoided the microbial spoilage as well.
