Additional Information: | Green leafy vegetables (GLV) that are commonly consumed for nutritional purpose in southwestern part of India have been evaluated for their carotenoid composition by high performance liquid chromatography. The vitamin A activity of GLVs was calculated on the basis of provitamin A carotenoids ( β-carotene and α-carotene) detected as retinol equivalents (RE) based on the in vivo conversion factor proposed by the WHO, 1992. Except a few studies (Rajyalakshmi, 2001;Nambiar, 1998; Gopalan, 1996; Singh, 2001; Lakshminarayana, 2005), data on the carotenoid composition of Indian GLV is scarce. Data on these pigments in GLVs grown in different geographical regions is very much essential because of their composition that varies markedly with change in climatic conditions. Chen and Chen (1992) reported 100 ± 8 μg of β-carotene and 78 ± 7 μg of lutein per 10 gram of wet weight in Ipomoea aquatica. While, Wills and Rangga (1996) have reported much lower content of these carotenoids in the same species. To overcome such variations, data on the composition of carotenoids in GLVs grown in different geographical regions is very much essential. |
