Abstract

Three alpha-amylases (E.C. 3.2.1.1) were purified to apparent homogeneity from 72 h finger millet malt by three step purification via fractional acetone precipitation, Embelin (2,5-dihydroxy-3-undecyl-p-benzoquinone) was extracted from Embelia ribes berries, purified and tested as a grain protectant on stored wheat. 0.0125% embelin was effective against larvae of Corcyra cephalonica and Ephestia cautella for 8 months, and 0.05 and 0.1% gave good protection against Trogoderma granarium. 0.025% concn. gave 50% adult mortality with Rhyzopertha dominica and significantly reduced productivity (progeny/21 adult-days), and 50% adult mortality with Sitophilus oryzae, but in this case productivity was not significantly different from controls; there was no contact toxicity to adults of these 2 spp. Treatment did not adversely affect wheat germination. Overall effectiveness of embelin against the 3 beetle and 2 moth pests studied was C. cephalonica greater than E. cautella greater than R. dominica greater than T. granarium greater than S. oryzae.
