Abstract

The nutritive value of fats used for edible purposes was the subject of study by a large number of workers. Deuel et al (1, 2), Parish et al (3) and Harris and Mosher (4) did not find any difference in the growth promoting value of different fats, when fed along with an adequate diet to rats. Schantz et al (5) and Boutwell et al (6) reported butter fat to be superior to other fats in promoting growth in albino rats. The superiority of butter fat over other fats was observed when the carbohydrate present in the diet is mainly lactose (6). Fats are also found to have a beneficial effect on the utilisation of calcium and phosphorus (7, 8, 9). Although a large amount of work has been done on the nutritive value and effect on mineral metabolism of a wide variety of edible oils, little information is available concerning crude, refined and hydrogenated cottonseed oil. The present paper deals with studies on the growth-promoting value and effect on mineral metabolism of crude, refined and hydrogenated cottonseed oil in growing rats.
