Abstract

The guava (Psidium guajava) is a major fruit of India. In 1948-49, the area under ,guavas was 1,07,251 acres (Lal, Tandan, and Pruthi, 1952). Uttar Pradesh, with an area of nearly 70,000 acres (Prasad, Mehta and Lal, 1953), is by far the most important guava-producing state in India. Allahabad has the reputation of producing the best guavas in the country (Hayes, 1945). Hawaiian-grown fruits of the strawberry guava (Psidiwn cattleiallwn), picked almost ripe, and stored at 32' F and 36"F, shrivelled and decayed in the course of one month (Wilcox and Hunn, 1914). According to Wardlaw (1937), considerably higher temperatures are considered necessary for the storage of this fruit. During the course of this investigation an attemp! has been made to d'clerminc the optimum cold storage conditions for guaws grown in the Mysore State.
