Abstract

The effectiveness of the commercial seed-treatment quinone fungicides chloranil and dichlone as protectants of stored wheat against the curculionid Sitophilus oryzae, the bostrichid Rhyzopertha dominica and the pyralid Ephestia cautella was studied. Their activity was also compared with that of natural embelin, a benzoquinone isolated from the berries of Embelia ribes. Embelin and chloranil at concentrations of 0.0125 and 0.025% (w/w), resp., in wheat produced mortalities of 77.8 and 68.7% in adults of S. oryzae after 14 days exposure, while dichlone produced 82.8% mortality at a 0.1% concentration level. Against R. dominica, dichlone, even at a concentration level of 0.0125%, gave 78% adult mortality after 14 days, whereas mortality with embelin and chloranil at 0.025 and 0.05% was 71 and 68%, resp. Embelin and dichlone at 0.0125% significantly reduced the production of progeny by S. oryzae and R. dominica, while choranil did so only at the 0.05% level. Dichlone did not exhibit any chemosterilant action on the adults of S. oryzae or R. dominica, or any inhibitory effect on oviposition by S. oryzae. Adult emergence of E. cautella was significantly low in all the quinone treatments as compared with the controls. Dichlone controlled insects at the rate recommended for fungicidal application.
