Abstract

The relations between the pesticidal action of a juvenile hormone analogue (methyl 3,7,11-trimethyl-7,11-dichloro-2-dodecenoate), food material and species of insect pests of stored grains were studied in the laboratory in India. As judged by adult emergence following larval feeding on food material treated with the compound at concentrations of 12.5-200 p.p.m., Stegobium paniceum (L.) on wheat flour or cumin seeds (Cuminum cyanum) was the most suceptible, followed by Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) on sorghum (jowar) or dehusked bengal gram (Cicer arietinum), Callosobruchus (Bruchus) chiensis (L.) on green gram (Phaseolus mungo) or bengal gram, and Sitophilus granarius (L.) on whole wheat in that order. The data indicated that, in addition to species specificity of the analogue, the sorptive property or permeability of the food material to the compound is important in control.
