Abstract

Streptomyces cultures are rather difficult to cultivate on solid substrates in the way fungal cultures are grown. This is because of presence of acid components in solid substrates derived from plant sources (e.g. wheat bran). Buffering salts were employed to maintain pH 7.0 to facilitate growth of streptomyces cultures. Among various agricultural by-products tested, wheat bran, red gram husk, paddy husk and coconut fibre supported good growth of various streptomyces cultures, and facilitated production of high titres of xylanase. Surface cultivation gave better yields of enzyme than submerged cultivation. Some of the cultivation conditions were standardized for the surface method of xylanase production.
