Abstract

The toxic effect of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)on the germination of some seeds Brassica juncea (Mustard), Raphanus sativus (Radish), Phaseolus aureus (green gram), Phaseolus vulgaris (French beans), Hibiscus esculentum (Ladies finger), Oryza sativa (Pady) and Eleucine coracona (Ragi) wee tested. There was a marked reduction in the germination of the seeds with increase in DDT concentration. Paddy seeds were most affected and at 50 MU g DDT (per gram soil) level, wherein the germination was completely inhibited. Abnormalities were observed in root, shoot and leaf developments. Protease and the amylase activites were reduced in seeds grown in soils spiked with DDT.
